How do I save my data from Google Photos?

Google has implemented new restrictions around their Google Photos platform, which has changed the way Picture Keeper is able to access and save the files stored within your Google account. Don't worry though! There's still a way to request all of your data from Google Photos. This request is handled by Google and is best completed using a Mac or Windows computer. Once this data has been downloaded, you can then copy it over to your Picture Keeper drive.

DOWNLOAD DATA TO YOUR COMPUTER

1. Use this link to access Google's Takeout service, and if needed, sign in to your Google account.
2. Click the Next step button at the bottom right:
   
    
3. Click Create export at the bottom right:
   
    
4. You should see that the export is in progress, and Google will email you when it's ready:
   
    
5. When you receive the email, click the Manage Google Takeout request button:
   
    
6. Your export may be broken up into several parts. Click the Download button(s) to the right of each:
   
    

COPY DATA TO PICTURE KEEPER

1. Connect your Picture Keeper to your PC and open File Explorer
2. Open your Downloads folder:
   
    
3. Double-click the first "takeout..." ZIP file to view its contents:
   
    
4. Open the Takeout folder:
   
    
5. Click to select the Google Photos folder:
   
    
6. Click the Copy button or press Ctrl + C to copy the folder:
   
    
7. Click PKBACKUP on the left (this can also be found by clicking This PC):
   
    
8. Open the Backups folder:
   
    
9. Click the Paste button or press Ctrl + V to paste the folder:
   
    
10. There will be a Google Photos folder that appears here:
    
     
11. Return to the Downloads folder and double-click the next "takeout..." ZIP file to view its contents:
    
     
12. Repeat steps 4 - 9. This time while pasting, you may see a prompt indicating that the destination folder has X files with the same names. If you see this prompt, click Skip these files:
    
     
13. Repeat the steps for each subsequent "takeout..." ZIP file until you've finished copying all of them. Organize the files within PKBACKUP > Backups > Google Photos to your liking. Anything within the Backups folder on the drive will be detected by the Picture Keeper app on next use.
